A flickering wall sconce is usually a loose bulb, a faulty dimmer, or a wiring issue. Here's how to diagnose and fix each cause safely.

Quick Answer

Most sconce flicker is caused by a loose bulb, a dimmer mismatch, or a loose wire connection. Start with the bulb and work up to the wiring, and call an electrician if the problem persists after tightening.

Why a Loose Bulb Is the Most Common Culprit

A sconce that flickers intermittently often has a bulb that isn't seated fully in the socket. Vibration from foot traffic or door slams can loosen it over time, especially in hallways and entryways. Before you do anything else, turn off the light, let the bulb cool, and give it a firm quarter-turn clockwise.

Dimmer Compatibility and LED Bulbs

If the bulb is tight and the flicker continues, check whether the sconce is on a dimmer. Many LED bulbs are not dimmable, and even dimmable ones may require a specific dimmer type. A mismatch can cause a rapid, low-level flicker that's hard to see but noticeable at the edge of your vision. Try replacing the bulb with a dimmable LED or a standard incandescent to isolate the issue.

When to Stop and Call an Electrician

If the flicker persists after checking the bulb and dimmer, the cause is likely a loose wire connection inside the fixture or at the wall switch. Working with live wires is dangerous, and a flicker that comes with a buzzing sound or a warm switch plate points to a serious issue. Stop troubleshooting and contact a licensed electrician.

Sconce Flicker Diagnosis

  • Symptom: Occasional flicker, especially after nearby movement: Turn off the light, let the bulb cool, then remove and reinsert it, making sure it's snug in the socket. If the flicker stops, the fix is done. If not, move to the next step.
  • Symptom: Rapid, subtle flicker on a dimmer: Replace the bulb with a dimmable LED or a standard incandescent. If the flicker disappears, the bulb was incompatible with the dimmer. If the flicker persists with a known-good bulb, the dimmer itself may be the issue—try a different dimmer or bypass it temporarily.
  • Symptom: Flicker continues after bulb and dimmer checks: Turn off the circuit breaker, then inspect the wire connections inside the sconce's canopy and at the wall switch. Tighten any loose wire nuts or terminal screws. If you see damaged wires, scorch marks, or feel unsure about the connections, stop and call a licensed electrician.

Product Note

  • Belle Sconce: The Belle Sconce uses a single E26, 60W bulb (not included) and is rated for UL and cUL damp locations. Because the bulb isn't included, you control the light source—choose a dimmable LED if you plan to use a dimmer, and always match the bulb type to the fixture's rating.
