Learn how to install a ceiling fixture on a sloped ceiling using a canopy swivel. Step-by-step guide to keep your light hanging straight and secure.
Quick answer
Use a canopy swivel to mount any ceiling fixture on a sloped ceiling. It pivots to keep the light hanging straight down instead of tilting with the angle.
Why you need a canopy swivel for sloped ceilings
Standard ceiling fixtures are designed for flat ceilings. When installed on a sloped ceiling without an adapter, the fixture tilts, looking crooked and potentially stressing the wiring. A canopy swivel compensates for the angle, letting the light hang plumb.
The Worley's Lighting Canopy Swivel is a low-cost solution that works with most ceiling-mounted lights. It attaches between the junction box and the fixture canopy, providing a pivot point that adjusts up to about 30 degrees.
Step-by-step installation guide
- 1. Turn off power and remove existing fixture: Switch off the breaker to the room. Remove the old light fixture and disconnect the wires. Take down the mounting bracket that came with the fixture. Double-check power is off with a voltage tester before touching any wires.
- 2. Attach the canopy swivel to the junction box: Place the canopy swivel over the junction box so its pivot arm points downward. Use the screws provided with the swivel or the box to secure it. The swivel must be oriented so it can pivot along the slope direction. If the swivel doesn't pivot freely after tightening, loosen the screws slightly and re-check alignment.
- 3. Connect the fixture wires: Thread the fixture wires through the swivel's center hole. Connect black to black, white to white, and ground to ground using wire nuts. Tuck the connections neatly into the junction box. Make sure no bare wire is exposed outside the wire nuts to avoid short circuits.
- 4. Mount the fixture canopy to the swivel: Slide the fixture canopy over the swivel's threaded nipple. Secure it with the provided lock ring or nut. The canopy should sit flush against the ceiling, with the swivel adjusting to the slope. If the canopy doesn't sit flush, the swivel may need to be rotated 180 degrees to match the slope direction.
- 5. Install the bulb and test: Screw in the recommended bulb type for your fixture. Restore power at the breaker and flip the switch. The light should hang straight down, not tilted. If the light still tilts, the swivel may not be fully adjusted. Loosen the canopy and pivot the swivel slightly before retightening.
Product you may need
- Canopy Swivel for Sloped Ceiling: Purchase the canopy swivel when installing any of our ceiling mounted lights on a sloped ceiling. This will allow your fixture to hang straight down. Without it, your light will tilt with the ceiling angle, which looks unprofessional and may not align with the room's design.
