Set pendant light hanging height with confidence. Use these steps for kitchen islands, dining tables, and entryways, plus spacing and bulb tips.

Quick answer

Hang pendant lights 30 to 36 inches above a kitchen island or dining table, measured from the bottom of the fixture to the surface. For entryways or open floor areas, keep the bottom of the pendant at least 7 feet above the floor. Always check sightlines from where people actually stand and sit.

Measure from the right reference point

The most common mistake is measuring from the ceiling or from the shade top. Pendant light hanging height is measured from the lowest point of the fixture to the surface below. That is the number people see and the number that affects clearance. Measure from the bottom of the shade or glass, not the canopy or cord.

Adjust for ceiling height and room use

A 9-foot ceiling and a 12-foot ceiling need different cord lengths. If the ceiling is very high, you may need a longer downrod or chain than the fixture includes. For rooms where people walk under the pendant, such as an entry or hallway, the 7-foot floor clearance matters more than the island rule. For a dining table, you can go slightly lower if the pendant is small and the table is large.

Space pendants evenly and account for shade width

Pendant light spacing depends on shade diameter. A common guideline is to leave 24 to 30 inches between the centers of adjacent pendants, and at least 30 inches from the edge of the island or table to the center of the nearest pendant. If your shades are wider than 12 inches, add a few inches to those gaps. For a single large pendant over an island, center it on the island, not the room.

Check the view from seated and standing positions

Before you finalize the height, sit at the table or stand at the island. The bottom of the pendant should not block eye contact across the table. If it does, raise it 2 to 3 inches. In kitchens, also check that the pendant does not block the view of a range hood or a window. A quick test: sit down, look straight ahead, and see if the shade cuts across your line of sight.

Match the bulb to the fixture and the height

Bulb shape and brightness change how the pendant reads at different heights. A lower pendant with a bright, exposed bulb can glare; a higher pendant may need more lumens. Use the bulb type the fixture is rated for. The Protea Pendant II 8" takes one E26 bulb up to 60W and is UL and cUL listed for damp locations, so it can work over a sink or in a covered porch. The Wrightsville Pendant includes a bulb rated at 550 lumens and uses a 16-inch glass diffuser, which spreads light more softly than a bare bulb.

Pendant light hanging height in 5 steps

  1. Measure from the bottom of the fixture: Use a tape measure from the lowest point of the pendant to the island, table, or floor. Do not measure from the ceiling. Checkpoint: the number should be 30–36 inches for islands and dining tables, or at least 7 feet above a floor.
  2. Set the height for the room's main use: For task lighting over an island, aim for 30–36 inches. For a dining table, 30–34 inches often feels better. For an entry, prioritize 7-foot floor clearance. Common mistake: using the same height everywhere instead of matching the activity.
  3. Space multiple pendants evenly: Leave 24–30 inches between pendant centers and at least 30 inches from the island edge to the nearest pendant center. Add more spacing for shades wider than 12 inches. Checkpoint: stand at one end of the island and look down the row—the gaps should look equal.
  4. Sit and stand to test sightlines: Sit at the table and look across. If the pendant blocks eye contact, raise it 2–3 inches. Stand at the island and check that it does not block the range hood or a view. Adjust before you trim cords or cut downrods.
  5. Choose a compatible bulb and check brightness: Use the fixture's rated bulb type. For damp locations, confirm the fixture is rated for damp areas. If the pendant is high, choose more lumens; if low, choose a softer or diffused bulb. Final check: turn the lights on at night and confirm no glare at seated eye level.

Product facts that affect hanging height

  • Protea Pendant II 8": Protea Pendant II 8" uses one E26 bulb up to 60W and is UL and cUL listed for damp locations. You can hang it over a kitchen sink or covered porch, but you still need to keep the bottom 30 to 36 inches above the counter for task lighting.
  • Wrightsville Pendant: Wrightsville Pendant has a 16-inch glass diffuser and includes a 550-lumen bulb. The wide diffuser softens light, so you can hang it a bit lower over a dining table without harsh glare, but the 16-inch width needs more spacing between pendants.
  • LED Light Bulb A15 40w - 2 Pack: LED Light Bulb A15 40w - 2 Pack has a CRI of 90+ and an A15 shape. High CRI makes food and finishes look better under pendant light, and the smaller A15 shape fits many shaded pendants without protruding.
